Shepherd’s Bush Green Needs Friends

Shepherd's Bush Green last summer
Shepherd’s Bush Green needs friends.

Three years after the Shepherd’s Bush Blog first started started posting about the sorry state of Shepherd's Bush Green, and the failure of our Council to do anything about the enforcement of its own laws against anti-social behaviour, things are as bad as ever.

Walk across Shepherd's Bush Green in the morning and you will see piles of fast food, empty bottles and cans, and rubbish everywhere.

Broken glass in the playground
As the evenings get longer and warmer the problem will get worse.

On the right is a photo taken by a local parent, who last week cleaned up a small pile of broken glass from the children's playground on the Green.

What sort of person leaves broken glass in a children's playground? And why do we seem to be helpless to do anything about it?

The worst of it is that there doesn't seem to be any attempt by our Council to enforce its own laws.

LBHF are good at handing out parking tickets to motorists; cars are an easy target, and a lucrative source of revenue.

But has anyone seen anyone actually get a ticket (Fixed Penalty Notice, or "FPN") for dropping litter in the Bush?

It's not like it would be hard to identify who is doing it - the same people are out on Shepherd's Bush Green every night, and there is plenty of CCTV footage to review.

In fairness to the council. the people from Serco who have to clean up the mess do so patiently every day.

But surely there should be a way of making it unattractive for people to create the mess in the first place.

The Friends of hepherd's Bush is a group of volunteers living in Shepherd’s Bush who are dedicated to making our neighbourhood a better place to live.  If you would like to get involved, email us at fosbgrn@gmail.com. And don't forget to add your opinion in the comments section below.
